I’m now fully immersed in my off season if my bathroom scale is any indication. I had been going pretty much non-stop since last November so it’s past time for me to dial back the miles and sleep in more often. I don’t necessarily think I was too close to overdoing things, but you never really know until you push yourself over the line.

Most people probably look forward to cutting back their running and taking it easy for a bit. And I like my downtime just as much as the next guy. The only difference is that after a couple weeks, I begin itching to start ramping back up to my normal 40-50 miles per week. I’ve done 12 and 24 miles in the 2 weeks since Stone Mill. Everything nice and easy.

I should be enjoying this time or year (besides the late sunrises). And I am. . . kinda. But I’m also looking forward to getting back at it again. I’ve got big plans for 2021 and will need a solid base to accomplish them. Before I start building that base though, I need to give my body a period of rest.

I think I’ve gotten pretty good at waiting for things since I got into ultras. I was able to wait 2 plus years before attempting my first 100 milers. And if this past year has taught me anything, it’s to wait for things. Even if the timing is uncertain. So I just need to grind through this month of short runs and plentiful off days. Pretty soon my training volume will be back to normal.

I just need to wait for it.
